  • My first grain and extract brew

Well, while waiting for some furniture to be delivered, I decided to an extract brew with ingredients I picked up while on a brewing course. Decided on a Porter with a bit of a kick. I input the ingredients into iBrewMaster and it calculated a O.G of 1.064, perfect for the ABV I was aiming for.

Steeped the Crystal and chocolate malts for 30mins, then hopped for 30mins and then added in the LME and DME and with 30 mins to go in the boil, added my second hop.

Well after cooling and topping up with water, I took an OG reading.........1.094

After lots of muttering and scratching of heads and cursing iBM, a lightbulb lit up. I had the initial wort full of LME and DME and had topped up with water, but I didnt mix so I assumed the heavy wort was still sitting at the bottom (I had used the tap on the fermenter to get my sample) so after a good stir and another reading.....1.063. Hopfully its going to be a goody for cold winter days and nights!
