  • Vienna SMaSH

As part of going back to first principles in brewing, I have decided to do some SMaSH brewing... and no, not that awful stuff usually served with toppers on hikes

SMaSH refers to Single Malt Single Hops, where you only use one kind of malt and one hops.

Last time I brewed a Belgian Blonde with only Pale Malt and EKG Hops. The result was pretty good, especially given some time.

This time around I'm brewing a Vienna SMaSH, based roughly on Saison, using only Vienna Malt and Amarillo Hops. Going to get stuck in the evening as a primer for the weekend's other brew, my Pumpkin Dubbel

Sounds delicious. Makes me want to get started on a new brew.
    Primary: Bohemian Lager
Secondary: Bohemian lager/ Ale fusion - Added US-05 to secondary
    Next up: Bohemian Lager
    Then: Bohemian Lager
    And Then: Bohemian Lager
    Conditioning: Chucked Fruit Ale

Nothing wrong with plain and simple homebrewed beer. We like to be creative and clone or produce unique beers but its nice to brew something straightforward once in a while. I'm keen to see the results

I opened the first of these last night... man what a nice beer. Lovely head which followed all the way down to an empty glass. Very clear, good mouthfeel, quite malty, and not quite offset enough by the hops, so I'll add a smidgen more for bittering to the next batch. Vienna malt is something i will definitely be using more of (this was the first time I used it). The only thing is the yeast attenuates extremely well compared to the T-58 I used for Saisons in the past. So my FG ended up being WAY lower than expected.
