  • First All Grain

Yesterday I brewed my first all grain recipe. The following are tips that I would like to share:

    1. Get everything ready beforehand. Get the grains weighed out and all the equipment that you are going to need cleaned, assembled and ready
    2. If possible, TEST your system beforehand. Time how long it takes to get water from tap (room temp) to boil in your boiler. Determine what the temp loss is between boiler and mashtun. Check what the temp loss is in your mashtun over 60 minutes. Measure the "dead space" in your mashtun and use it in your calculations. Write everything down. Do a "mock" brew to make sure that you have all the equipment to rack/transfer the wort from mashtun to kettle without excessive oxidation
    3. Do not drink too much while brewing
    4. Do not throw your spent grain down the drain, it will block it up.
    5. If you use electronic equipment, have extra batteries available.
    6. Make sure you have enough LP gas.
    7. Make sure you can cool your hot wort (have enough ice)

    Have a great day!

Yeah, you learn a lot very quickly on your first all-grain brew (and your second, and your third )

What was your efficiency? I think mine was about 50% for my first one.

Not sure. How do I calculate? Beersmith said my OG will be 1.034 and I got 1.032.

I just checked and I did not take the pre-boil gravity, so I do not think that I can determine the efficiency.

Will remember to take more reading next time.

What is the expected efficiency in Beersmith?

If you put in your actual OG, it'll tell you your actual efficiency.

Apparently my searching sucks, but I eventually found it.

            82.4%

That's really good for a first time. What was the efficiency of the recipe?
