  • Harvesting Yeast from a bottle

OK this is how I do it:

Before opening - burn the neck of the bottle:

Burn the neck again - inside and outside:

Pour slowly into you glass and safe last bit.

Swirl and pour last bit into a sterilised jar and put in the fridge and alow the yeast to settle:

In the jar is the yeast of 2 bottles of weiss.
More on this as I continue.

Faan... which beers are you harvesting? Obviously this is only bottle conditioned beer...

CBC amber weiss. Don't think these were bottle conditioned but they are unfiltered.

Cooling down my "weak wort" and heating up the harvested yeast

Threw some of this stuff in to help the yeast:

Let me know how it goes, because I'd be keen to do the same - want to try clone it

Added more "wort" - a bit stronger this time. It started to foam nicely - I think it is working

Faan, are you just boiling up DME as you need it, or did you boil up a big one and try and keep it sterile?

Faan, how is this going for you? I'd be interested in getting some of the yeast from you, but logistics is a slight issue.

Unless you know exactly what yeast it is they are using.

                      Bump...

I'm probably going to CBC tomorrow, so will buy some of their beers. Just want to know how successful this was..

Very, I will need to grow it a bit more but I ended up with a nice thick layer of yeast at the bottom of the flask. It is in jar at the moment since I need my flask for some lager yeast cleaning.

                          Nice layer of yeast already:

Just make sure the beers you buy are unfiltered ....

It's the Amber Weiss I'm after the same one you just cloned. Unless Wolfgang will be so kind as to just give me some

cool stuff. Let us know how it goes. The reason why I harvested it is that I get a strange feeling that Wolgang is not going to use commercial yeast ...
