I felt the same. Until I got two skunked brews in a row. Clear/light isn't the best.

I think there was quite a bit, yeah. What are you looking for? I've had success with some Mangrove Jack's yeasts, and I'm about to try some more, but for the most part I've found alternatives that's better.

I fail to see any reason why. And I can think of a few reasons why not.

What do you suggest is best Jakes.
        SS Conical?

Well yes, but it comes at a price. A regular brew bucket works fine for homebrewers.

Then again if you're fermenting in a fermentation chamber (like a fridge) there's nothing wrong with a clear vessel. It's pitch black in there anyway.

My opinion for a beginner? NOTHING WITH A TAP.

For outside a dark closet/fridge/chamber: A black 25L water drum and a syphon.
For inside a dark closet/fridge/chamber: A white 25L water drum and a syphon.

In my experience having run Worties Hartbeespoort brewing club for over 5 years: fermenter taps have ruined more beers than any other hygiene issue.

A glycol chilled SS conical is first prize. But you must know how to clean it and use it otherwise IMHO it will be a very expensive ornament...........

By the way, places like Pioneer plastic offer these with a steel stand:

Thanks. At the moment I'm using a white bucket with tap in a temp controlled freezer.
So it will be dark and at the correct temp.
I feel I am very thorough when it comes to cleaning.
              But I am a beginner.
I would like a SS fermenter that could fit in my freezer.

              Something like this

For now maybe I should get a couple of white buckets with no taps and a syphon.

80L Conical is to big to fit in freezer and my garage is to warm in summer for it to be outside.

I started off with these, they are food grade 25liter plastic buckets, cheap as chips and I replaced them every 6 months or so.

Used upright fridges with removable shelves and an STC1000. You can buy 3 second hand fridges which will take up the floor space of one large freezer. Three brews with individual temp control. Heaven.

Afterwards the M20 Weiss yeast, the M44 US west coast and the M47 Belgian Abbey.

What do you think of this. Bigger than a bucket for larger brews?

Is it OK to do a 20L batch in a large fermenter like this? Will the extra headspace give a greater chance of infection or oxidation?

                          Go for it.
As long as you don't disturb it, the CO2 forms a layer above the beer which naturally protects it. More headspace means less chance of an eruption due to a strong krausen and more time for the bubbler to react, IMHO. And now you could do a back-to-back batch within 24 hours and have 50L of beer........

Haven't tried the M20 or the M47, but I think I've used their M44 West Coast before. It's essentially the same as US-05, and with more info on US-05 I think I'd rather use that. It's clean and it works.

s/s is cool, however for longevity you'd need it to at least handle 10-15psi pressure. decent heating/cooling, trub dump, dry hopping ability, closed transfer etc etc that r3k version is just a fancy bucket and not worth it

spike has a neat one, then there's also this https://www.brewtools.com/products/f...34-p0000000437
locally the closest you'll get, is the gf conical, which is alright i guess.
i've stopped buying brewing/distilling stuff until i'm on the other side. that bb80pro has my name on it
