OK, summer (or even spring) should eventually arrive in the Western Cape before the end of the year and when it does temperatures in our house hover in the high 20’s. I found a cheap enough fridge which will fit my carboy. The STC-1000 is being delivered tomorrow and I have a reptile heating pad which I used to keep my yeast from going dormant in our colder winter nights. I’ve read through this thread but I don’t want to test our smoke alarms by trying to wire the STC and heating pad myself.
This is probably a very stupid question; but will any sparky be able to wire it properly?

Mouter, it’s really not difficult to wire yourself. You just need a couple of chocolate box wire connectors, and follow the wiring diagram in this blog:

      https://mygreenmisadventure.wordpres...re-controller/

just bear in mind that some fridges have compressor protectors built-in, so when you first switch on the circuit, the fridge may not power in immediately - it should do after 5 minutes though.

Thanks. I’ll have a look tonight when I have the STC in hand.

I didn't run the cooling relay to a power cord, I just disconnected the wires from the freezers own thermostat and wired in the STC cooling relay in to those wires. Have a 3 minute delay on the compressor set in the STC. Works a treat

That's actually the correct way of doing it, but there's usually 3 wires on the fridge thermo and i don't always know what goes where? ... Is there a link on how to do this correctly?

This YouTube video looks like a decent explanation and includes heating too. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6RT9QFxdZpQ

The way this is wired (220V mains in and 2 x 3 prong sockets out) you just plug the fridge and heating pad 3 prong plugs into the right sockets, turn the fridge to its coldest and the STC switches mains on and off as required.
That’s easy enough for even me to do, but isn’t it going to be bad for the fridge?

                      • Good day brewsters..

I've been thinking of building a ferminator for the summer temps and also as a next step forward in the brewing hobby. Thinking of getting a 2nd hand chest freezer that may fit 2x 5gal carboys (my current batch size).
                        Saw a temp controller:
                        https://www.robotics.org.za/XH-W3001-220V
or the famous STC-1000 that I see at online brewshops:
                        https://www.robotics.org.za/STC-1000

Then for heating I thought of a heating pad for seedling plants:
                        https://hydroponic.co.za/hydroponics...saAgBnEALw_wcB

                        Thoughts?

                        • An operational fridge with a STC-1000 and 25W seedling heating pad is exactly what I use for my fermentations, works great.
